One week to go

The Rock and Roll Phoenix Marathon is almost here and in a way I’m looking forward to it, but I’m also not looking forward to it.  My training hasn’t gone on all that well because of my knee and I really don’t want to go out and do this half ass.  But then again, I have no real expectations and I can just relax and enjoy it.  Umm, how can anybody enjoy running 26 miles?  It’s also tough to train for a marathon early in the year when you live in a cold weather state.  I hate getting up at 5:00, going out in the darkness, when it’s 20 degrees out there.  I tried out the local fitness center, and even with 20 treadmills, it’s hard to get one.  It seems like everybody is there.  And if you think about it, I’m training in the freezing cold for a marathon that is is Arizona, and it will be 70 degrees.  That just doesn’t seem right.  But then I look back at my previous training for marathons, and it’s the same way.  Last year I trained mostly in the cold (Jan - April) for a marathon that when I ran it, it was 80 degrees.  Another one was when I trained all summer for a marathon in the fall, and it was 34 degrees and freezing rain at that one.  So when you think about it, you’re not really training in the right type of weather.  It’s always something.

I’ve refrained from talking football for awhile mostly because my team went 0-16 and my fantasy teams sucked.  I can’t seem to enjoy it as much this year.   I think it all started in week one when my best friend, Tom Brady of the New England Patriots, went down for the year with a knee injury.  It hasn’t been the same with out him.  Okay, he’s not really my best friend, but I’m sure he would like me if he got to know me.  Hurry back Tom.  Football (and me) need you.

The Fun Has Begun

I ran 12 miles last Saturday and although it was nice and sunny, it was 7 degrees when I started out!  But by the time I finished, it was around 20 degrees and I was sweating.  Plus it had snowed the night before so the path was a bit difficult.  I started out wanting to go 14, but with the snow on the ground, it required more effort to get thru it, so I figured at that point 12 was just as good as 14.  If that makes any sence.

After my run, I stopped in to Runners Roost to buy some more socks.  Mine are getting a little thin and in the cold weather, it does make a difference.  But instead of getting socks, I ended up getting shoes!  They had a great sale on end of model year shoes, so I got me a pair of Brooks Adrenaline GTS-7’s for only $55!  I think I may go back again this weekend and see what else I can get.

My schedule this week isn’t too bad.  My hope is that the weather cooperates.  Monday I had to do 4 miles, and it was 4 degrees out, so I decided to do it on the treadmill.  I don’t mind the treadmill on a run of 3 or 4 miles, but no more than that.  It gets sooooo boring.  On Tuesday I did a 7 mile loop by my apartment which went real well.  I felt very good and actually wanted to go more!  But I need to stick with my schedule and do what it tells me to do.

Thursday is my run with The Snug Runners and even though we only do a 3 mile run, I will be doing 6.  I get there early, run 3 miles, come back to the bar, have a Guinness, then go running with group for another 3 miles!  I’m thinking that maybe I should fill my water bottle with Guinness too.

This weekend I will be doing 14……unless the weather sucks.  I also signed up at a new gym (they haven’t even opened yet, but they are only a mile from my apartment) so I’ll be back doing more weight training and core building exercises.  Diane and I also went to yoga class last Sunday, so I’m going to be doing yoga now every Sunday.  Only 16 weeks to go!

Runners “High” (or, “Moe, Larry, cheese”!)

I saw this one day and thought it was very interesting.  It seems that Opioids, the body’s chemical that creates the runners high, also can save the heart from damage during a heart attack.  Check out the story here

One thing that I don’t get is, do they have little miniature treadmills for the rats, or do they run on regular treadmills?  And do the rats get paid for this study?  Do the rats know what they are getting into when they volunteer?  Why don’t they use real people?  Take all the prisoners on death row, and make them do the study.  At least then the study would be comparing apples to apples.  None of this “study conducted with lab rats” crap.  Use real people.  We could easily get rid of the homeless population this way too.  And while we are at it, gather up all the illegal aliens that are criminals (some of them are good people) and make them do it.  If they don’t want to, it’s back where you came from amigo.
