Getting ready for Denver

It’s official.  I am running my next marathon and it is the inaugural Rock N Roll Denver Marathon.  It’s pretty much the same as the old Denver Marathon, but they have new owners, and of course a higher entry fee.  I actually didn’t want to do this one, but I got a free entry which saved me $90, and it’s the inaugural Rock N Roll!

So I’m starting to ramp up my training and the big question is, do I do speed work this time?   The reason that I’m hesitant is that every time I do speed work with a group, I injure myself.  I don’t know if it’s because I’m too competitive and I push myself harder with other people around or what?  So do I do it, but back it down a bit, or just do it on my own?  Aaacckk.

I did a nice little race last weekend called the Stadium Stampede 5K.  Towards the end, you run through Invesco Field which is where the Bronco’s play and see yourself on the big screen.  I did the race with Diane’s 13 year old niece Colleen, and it was the farthest she has ever run.   She did awesome and I hope that we can run again soon.  I took 2nd in my age group with a 24:32 time.  I thought maybe I would be in the top 10, but definitely not 2nd.  I actually miss 1st by 5 seconds and if I would have know that I was so close, I would have kicked it into another gear.

Not a good day

The San Antonio Marathon was this past weekend, and although I knew it was going to be a tough one because of the time I missed due to injury, I was hoping that I could still get through it.  It started out by getting to the shuttle bus area at around 5:45.  When Jason and I got there, we both were amazed at how many people were here.  But it was really worse than we thought!  The line wound around to the front of the building, then you came back towards the buses, then you turned and went away from the buses again, and then finally coming back to them.  It was like one of those lines at an amusement park or the security line at the airport.  I’m guessing that at that time there was around 6 or 7 thousand people there trying to get on the bus.  And more kept coming!

We finally got on a bus and headed out.  The ride was maybe 15 minutes long and then they dropped us off.  I’m looking around for the start, but I don’t see anything.  Mostly I see people going to the gas station to go to the bathroom.  There were luckily some other people that were walking along so we followed them.  And we walked, and we walked.  Where the hell is the start??!!  After maybe a half a mile, we see the start, and by this time it’s 7:15.  It was an hour and half from when we got to the shuttle area to the start.  So now I’m looking around for the food because they advertised that there would be bagels and banana’s at the start, and I hadn’t eaten anything that morning.  We get to the area where the tents are set up, and all we see is a table with raisins and apples.  That’s it?  We look around some more.  Nothing.  I’m doomed.  There’s no way I’m going to run a marathon with only raisins in my stomach.  We get in line for the bathrooms, and luckily that didn’t take very long and we make our way to our corral area. Where the port-a-lets are was at corral 30, and we had to make it to corral 7.  We are walking up there when the National Anthem starts and we end up at corral 9.

Once the race starts, I feel better about everything, and I feel good.  Hmmm….. maybe I can do a full marathon.  It’s funny how you think that after only running a half mile.  My plan was to run to the water stations and then walk for a minute.  So Jason and I are starting off together and his knee is doing good.  We do 9:45 the first mile (a little too fast, but not bad) and then we hit the water station near mile 2.  I get water and start walking, and Jason takes off.  I walk for a minute and then start running again.  After awhile I see Jason and I’m catching up to him.  This is not good.  I was doing around a 9:15 pace and I was catching up to him.  I catch him and ask how he’s doing and he says he doing all right, so we run together until the next water station where I get water and walk for a minute.  Jason keeps going so once I start running again , he is out of sight.

One thing that I forgot to mention, it’s 67 degrees at the start and 98% humidity.  Not ideal conditions to run in.  After 3 miles, I’m already wearing out.  Between the heat, humidity, and no food, this was not not pretty.  But I keep going on and the fact that there were so many people, it made it nice to run.  At around 6 miles, we pass by these houses and the people there were handing out Guinness beer.  So of course I had to drink one.  At mile 8 (or 9) we are going running in downtown San Antonio and going right by our hotel.  I had no clue that the race went this way.  Next thing I know Jason is raising his arms in celebration and I look over and there is Diane and Megan!  So seeing Diane gives me some instant energy and I feel good again, but it doesn’t last long.  I think it was less than a mile after that I hit the water station, and Jason goes on ahead.  My knee at this point is hurting a little bit, and I feel real sluggish.  After my minute walk, I start running again, and I see Jason up ahead and he is pulling off to the side.  I catch up to him and ask how he’s doing.  Yes I know, dumb question.  His knee is really hurting and he says he’s not going to make it.  I tell him that I don’t think I will either, but I’m not sure.  I leave him there in the ditch (I hope someone will help him out of there) and I head off.  But it wasn’t long before I got that feeling that I had to go to the bathroom.  This is the “dreaded” bathroom break and I can’t just go behind some tree.  I come up to a water station and there are 6 port-a-lets there.  One is open and I go in there.  No toilet paper.  I go into another one.  No toilet paper.  In fact, all 6 were out of toilet paper.  Not good.  At this point, it hurts my stomach to run.

The next thing I come up to is the break for the half marathon and the full.  If I go right, I do the full.  If I go left, I do the half.  I’m on the right side of the road and thinking that a miracle could happen and that I could still do the full.  I’m sure there’s a port-a-let up here soon, and there are plenty of water stations.  YOU CAN DO IT!  Luckily, I come to my senses and at the last second, I go left.  Thank goodness I listened to my brain and not my heart.  After a little bit, there are some port-a-lets and they have toilet paper!  Wahoo!

I finished the half and thanked myself for not attempting to do the full.  There will be more marathons (I hope) and this one I’ll be able to look back on and say that I did the right thing.  Jason and I will hook up again and we will finish one together.  Now if I could only get Michael to do one too…….

This time of year sucks

You know that time where it’s after football season, and before summer.  The dreary days of February are the worst.  It’s still cold, which makes it harder to run outside, and there’s no football to watch!  There are very few races to run, and if you belong to a fitness center, it’s packed.  The only thing that I have going is drinking beer.  But I’m afraid for some of these micro brewers around here.  With the economic conditions being what they are, I hope they all survive.  I know Diane and I are doing our part in supporting the micro brews.  You should see our recycle trash can.  It’s full of empty beer bottles.  I usually try and support the local (meaning Colorado) breweries, and right now I’m drinking a Red Truck IPA from Palisade Brewery in Palisade, Colorado.  Mmmm……tasty.  Diane is drinking a Single Track which is from the Boulder Brewing Co in Boulder, Colorado.

I did run 10 miles this morning, and I feel great.  I took it easy and my goal was to be around a 9:00 minute pace.  I ended at a 9:03 pace.  Is that cool or what?  I ran the first 5 miles with a guy I know, Ted, and he pooped out so I had to run the last 5 by myself.  But it felt good and my knee feels fine.  I’m trying to stick to the plan that’s outlined in the book, Run Less, Run Faster, and for the most part, I’ve been able to.  One thing that they stress in the book is cross training, and I really haven’t done any of that yet.  But Diane and I joined this fitness center near here so I’m going to go and use the stationary bike as my exercise for cross training.   I am digging the run less part :).  As it is, I only run 3 days a week.  It’s 13 weeks to go until my half marathon, and I believe that training this way will help prevent any more knee issues, and, I hope, will keep me fresher.  Actually taking a shower will keep me fresher.

My lame excuses

Wow.  I can’t believe how long it’s been since I’ve written anything.  No real excuses, but I do have some that I will share with you.

After the half marathon I ran, my daughter Kari got married 2 weeks later.  The ceremony was in Florida on Sanibel Island and it turned out great.  There were just a handful of people that came to it since most friends and family are from Michigan.  The ceremony was on the beach right at sunset, and the weather that day turned out perfect.  I was there for 4 days and most of the time I hung out at the beach with my boys Jason and Michael.  Of course we all ate and drank too much and I only got one run in.  I needed to go 18 - 20 miles, but all I could do was 14.  Possibly too much drinking the night before.

We now have a new addition to the family.  His name is Miles and he is a Black Labrador.  Diane and I got him when he was 6 weeks old, so he is for sure a handful.  He eats like he’s never eaten before, and chews up everything.  He’s 10 weeks old now and almost potty trained.  I guess that’s not too bad when you consider it takes 2 years to potty train a baby.  I’m looking forward to the days that we can go running together (hence the name Miles), but for now he sniffs and eats everything along the way when we go for a walk.

My training for my next marathon, the Rock and Roll Phoenix Marathon, is not going well.  I re injured my knee on a run 2 weeks ago, so I had to miss almost 2 weeks of my training.  I was scheduled to do 22 miles last weekend, but I ended up just working out on the elliptical machine at the gym.  I ran 14 miles yesterday, and although my knee is sore, it feels okay.  I will attempt 20 miles next weekend and see how everything feels.    It’s 5 weeks until the marathon, and I have some ground to make up, but I can’t be too aggressive in my training for fear that I hurt my knee again.

Well that’s my story,and I’m sticking to it.  I will try and be more diligent in my writings, and actually try and make it worthwhile reading.

Here we go again

My training officially started today to run another marathon.  I’ve decided that I’m going to train for a marathon, but not necessarily run one.  There’s a lot Diane and I want to do this summer and I can’t be too serious about my training and do all the things we want to do.  I’m still going to try and get in all my miles every week, but if it doesn’t happen, I’m not going to get upset.

My next step is to decide what marathon I want to run and I think I’m leaning towards the Detroit Free Press International Marathon.  I’m from Detroit so if I actually do book a flight there and don’t run the marathon for any reason, I can at least go back and visit family and friends.  If I do run the marathon, it will be interesting to see how I do at sea level since I live and train here in Denver.  The marathon itself goes from Detroit, crosses the bridge over the Detroit River into Windsor, Canada, and comes back thru the tunnel under the Detroit River.  It sounds pretty cool.  I’m going to try to talk my 2 sons, Jason and Michael, into doing it with me, or at least do the  half marathon.  There are the biggest wimps and losers in the world if they don’t.

Computer, run, and tooth

This is my first entry using my new computer. After 7 (?) years, I finally got a new one. The old one still worked and would do most of what I wanted, but I could tell it was getting to be like me. Takes awhile to get going and it may sputter out before it’s done. My CD/DVD drive wasn’t working which was bad because I couldn’t upload any songs from a CD to my MP3 player and most importantly, I couldn’t install the software that came with my Garmin that Diane bought me for Christmas. Well no more of that gigabyte breath! Now I am totally hooked up and there’s no excuse for me to not make the Olympic Marathon team. Really, how did they run marathons in the old days without knowing elevation gain, mile splits, and a feature that gets you back to the start? Now I can upload my run for the day and it will tell me everything, even how long my bathroom break was. I’m just now starting to figure out the features of this and once I have that mastered, I will still be the humble person that I always was.

I did 22 miles today and my calves are rebelling against me. I’ve pretty much just stayed on the couch most of the rest of the day, and I even give my calves a gentle massage. But they seem to be mad at me. When I get up to walk, they crunch up in a little ball and refuse to move. Don’t say anything, but I think that they are a bunch of babies. Nothing worse than baby calves! My run itself was nothing much to write about other than some of the awesome views that I saw. At one point, I’m running around this golf course that is right at the foothills. Very nice.

I didn’t get a chance to run as much this week because I had a chance to have a root canal done on Tuesday. No really. I don’t know if it was luck, or karma, or someone watching over me, but I got the pleasure of someone drilling my tooth, and extracting the nerve. I think that right now I should stop writing and go get a lotto ticket. It just doesn’t get any better.

Girls, Girls, Girls

Now don’t get too excited because it’s not what you think.  Last weekend, Diane’s sister-in-law and her 4 nieces came to visit.  Diane’s brother (the husband and the dad) stayed in Oklahoma to “work”.  Yeah right.  He went golfing, taped the Ohio State game, had a poker game and watch Ohio State beat up on Michigan State.  I don’t blame him though because I don’t think I could handle having 4 daughters.  I had all I could handle with Kari.  I asked him one time, “how do you handle having 4 daughters?”, and he replied, “that’s why I drink a lot.”
