I think I should just get a knew knee (yes, I purposely spelled it that way). I’m back doing some more shots because it was hurting again, and I was sick for a few days, so I lost about 2 weeks of training. I very rarely get sick, so that was a new experience, but the whole knee thing just caps it off. Get it, cap, like knee cap? Tonight was my speed workout and I was supposed to do 2 miles at a 7:08 pace, do another mile at a 8:30 pace, 2 more miles at the 7:08 pace, and then another mile at the 8:30 pace. But that didn’t happen. I did do a mile at at 7:30 pace, a recovery mile, and another mile at the 7:30 pace, a recovery mile, and then one more mile at about a 7:45 pace. I really struggled with the whole thing, and it’s affecting my mental state of mind. Well not really because my mind isn’t even in this state. I can’t remember where I left it. So anyway, the Colfax Marathon is less than 3 weeks away, and I hope to be able to get back somewhat to where I should be. We’ll see what happens, and if it seems like I’m still struggling, then that’s okay. I really like my training and the fact that I targeted a half marathon instead of a full. I would be upset if I was training for a full, and this all happened, but the fact that it happened during my training for the half, it just doesn’t seem as bad.

A Little Set Back
Well, I haven’t run all week because I’ve been having issues again with my knee. I’ve been noticing sharp pains (like it would be hard to notice?) in my knee whenever I would run lately, so I’ve been taking it a bit easy, and went back to my orthopedic doctor. She recommended the set of shots again because they did work well the first time and lasted 7 months. It’s some kind of stuff (sorry to get all technical on you) that they shoot right into the knee, and I have to get 5 shots all together. But then I’m good to go. It has set me back a bit on my training for my next half marathon, but I think I’ll be back up to speed soon, so I’m not too worried. I was hoping to get out tomorrow and run 10 to 12 miles, but it’s snowing and they are predicting up to 20″!!! It’s freaking April 17th! By Monday, it is supposed to be 70. Crazy. Sunday shouldn’t be too bad either, so I may run Sunday instead of Saturday, and we’ll see how it goes.
A “training” half marathon
I ran the Platte River Half Marathon this past Sunday, and did it as a training run. I was scheduled to do 12 anyway, so I thought why not add some spice to my training by doing this half marathon?
It was almost a perfect day for a run, but just a tad too cold. I had 3 layers of shirts on, and that turned out to be too much even though it only got to 30 degrees by the end. So at the beginning, I was fine, but by mile 5, I was getting too hot. I stuck it out until mile 9 though and attempted to take off my top layer. The problem was I forgot to undo my MP3 player from my arm. So I’m kind of running, and trying to take this top off, and it ended up being a wardrobe malfunction. I had to pull off onto the side and untangle everything, which ended up being quite a chore in itself. After almost a minute and a half, I was free, and I resumed my run.
The course was almost all downhill, with a few uphills thrown in for grins, until we got to mile 12. Then there was the “infamous” 8th street bridge. It is a 350 foot change in altitude in about a half mile. Plus where you have to go, it’s only like a skinny sidewalk, and it was very wet from the snow melting from the runners. Not a pretty sight. I went from doing a 8:45 pace to 9:35. Oh well, like I said, it was just a training run. So with my wadrobe malfunction and the dreaded bridge, I ended up at somewhere around a 1 hour 56 minute time. I forgot to turn off my Garmin at the end, and there wasn’t any timing chips, so I’m guessing it was somewhere around there because my “official” time was 1:58:11. Not bad.
I was diagnosed with MS about 6 years ago and I am one of the lucky ones. I don't have too many problems associated with it, and the disease has actually slowed down. I took up running 4 years ago just to see if I could do it. So far I've run 4 marathons in 2 years and 12 half marathons.
