Deep Thoughts for the Holiday

Interesting post by fellow runner kch from The Web MD on traffic fatalities and marathons

I really can’t believe how expensive running is.  I thought that when I took up running, it would be a cheap alternative to any other sport that is out there.  I knew shoes wouldn’t be cheap.  A decent pair of shoes that you can get from a running store costs anywhere from $95 to $135!  And if you’re training for a marathon, those shoes may only last 6 months at the most.  If you are serious about running, it is a good idea to go to a running store to get your shoes.  They can do tests to see what kind of runner you are and what shoe would work best for you.  Or you can try this site from Runners World magazine.  But you may have to go to the running store anyway to get those shoes. For Christmas, Diane bought me a Garmin 305 GPS.  It is an awesome (and expensive!) tool to help a neophyte like myself become a better runner.  My biggest problem when I run a race, is my pace.  The 305 will tell you what your pace is, and many, many, many other things.

One good thing about running in the colder weather is that my MS symptoms are pretty much non existent.  Running in temperatures above 70 degrees can really make me fatigued and I feel the numbness in my side and my leg much more than normal.  I was looking forward to running tonight at The Irish Snug but Denver has gotten a lot of snow lately and it’s 15 degrees.  The cold temps don’t bother me, it’s the 8″ of snow I would have to run through.

Next Marathon?

I’m struggling with what I want to do for my next marathon.  I originally thought I would go back to Michigan and run in a marathon in Traverse City in May, but now I’m leaning towards the Colfax Marathon.  They changed the course a bit for next year and it may actually be somewhat of an easy run.  It’s still at high altitude, but the course is mainly flat with few elevation changes.  I also know many other runners that will be running this one and it’s always nice to see some familiar faces when you’re out there running.  They also have a deal going until the end of the month whereas you sign up and a friend can sign up for free!  I asked a few runners that I know if they want to do that, but so far no takers.

I ran 12 miles Saturday morning and, Oh my gosh!  It was cold!  When I started out, it was 4 degrees, and by the end of my run, it was close to 20.  At least the sun was out!  I also had to wear my Yaktrax since there is snow on the ground

We had an office party the other night and my crew bought me a light to wear around my head when I’m running for my present.  I can’t wait to try it out.  It’s tough running these days because it’s dark when I go running after work and I really don’t want to go indoors yet and run on the treadmill.  I’m hoping the light keeps me from running into trees anymore.

The 3 G’s

The Relay TeamI’m not sure that I like marathon relays. You don’t get any of the adulation that the marathoners get, or even the half marathoners. In fact, I think your only purpose is to generate money for the event. You don’t get a medal, and I couldn’t even get a drink at the end. I ran the first leg of the Thunder Road Marathon in Charlotte which was 13.1 miles. Once I completed my leg and handed off the chip to Mike, I stood there for awhile wondering what to do. I wasn’t at the “real” finish line, so there was no fanfare or anything going on. But in spite of that, I had a great time. We as a team did real well, and the fact that I did it with Mike and Jason was the absolute best. I ran great mostly because I think it was at sea level, and I train at altitude. Mike was not happy with his time, but then again, he has had very little time lately to train. Jason did great and I think he was happy with his run.

Next year, we are each going to do at least a half marathon!

One Week to Go

The Charlotte Thunder Road Marathon is next weekend finally. It seems like Jason, Michael, and I have been talking about this forever. Now that it’s here, I’m not ready! Well, I’m sorta ready. I kind of slacked this week because Jason and Michael flew into town to pick up my car, so I missed out on 2 days of running. Not their fault of course, I just got lazy. I ran an easy 12 miles today, and I’ll run a couple more times before I fly to North Carolina. It should be interesting to run at sea level for once. I’m hoping that training at altitude will really help me to have a good race time. I’m shooting for 1 hour and 49 minutes for my leg of the relay (13.1 miles).
